Our program philosophy on playing time is as follows:  Each player on a team can expect to play an equal amount as their teammates over the first 30 minutes of a 40 minute CNR game.  Absent foul trouble or a disciplinary issue, the Jr. Eagles coaches are asked to find a rotation of players allowing for equal playing time over the first 3/4 of the game.  Over the last 10 minutes of the game we instruct the coaches to use this time to teach “situational” basketball.  This doesn’t mean a player will ever sit the entire last 10 minutes of a game, but they may be substituted for a particular matchup, role, etc.

We’ve shared with the coaches what has proved effective in the past and that’s to substitute “hockey” style at the 16:00, 12:00, 8:00 and 4:00 minute marks of the first half.  So if we have a team of 10 players present at a game, it would involve 5 players on and 5 players off at each of the intervals.  They would then be advised to continue with the “hockey” substitutions until the 8:00 minute mark of the 2nd half.  At that time they could begin to sub 1 or 2 players at a time to find favorable matchups.
