Jr. Eagles Basketball – Key Emphasis Areas 2025-26 Season

Positionless Basketball – Especially at our younger grade levels (2nd – 6th), it is imperative we teach players to play all positions.  It doesn’t matter if the its the biggest player on your team we need to teach all players how to handle the basketball in the full court and half court.  Quite simply we don’t have traditional “bigs and guards” until players get to the 7th grade level.

How we do this in games:

  • Bust Out Dribbles after a defensive rebound – Whoever gets the defensive rebound will be encouraged to “bust out” in transition.  Instead of making an outlet pass to a PG, the player getting the defensive rebound will turn and bust out towards the nearest sideline with eyes down the floor.  We want to encourage early “hit aheads” (passes up the floor) to a teammate sprinting “wide before deep” to fill corners. 1 player can run directly to the rim to put pressure on the basket.
  • Entries in the half court offense – Entries such as “Toss”, “Thru”, “Flip” will allow different players to be responsible for handling the ball in the half court.  These entires will also encourage the development of double & triple gaps to create space for the ball handler to attack the basket.

Practices should be designed to incorporate small-sided games (1v1, 2v2, 3v3) in lieu of going directly to 5v5. By playing these small-sided games we will get more touches by all players during practice and allow players to perform a variety of roles.

No Zone Defense – To develop athleticism and an understanding of how to guard the ball we will teach man to man defensive principles.
